Dental school clinics as patient care delivery centers: a paradigm shift in dental education.

Dr. Formicola is Professor of Dentistry and former Dean of the College of Dental Medicine at Columbia University, a position he held for twenty-three years. He is Vice-Dean of the Center for Community Health Partnerships, Columbia University. Dr. Formicola received his D.D.S. degree from Georgetown University and an M.S. degree in Periodontics. He taught at the schools of dentistry at Georgetown University and the University of Alabama and served as Chairman of the Department of Periodontics, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Acting Dean of the New Jersey Dental School. He has published many articles in the dental literature and has received awards for his contributions including Georgetown’s Distinguished Alumni Award, Harlem Hospital’s Second Century Award, and the American Dental Association’s Presidential Citation for significant contributions to the oral health of the public and to the profession of dentistry. He was also the 2006 recipient of ADEA’s Distinguished Service Award for significant contributions to education and research and to ADEA. Dr. Formicola received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Detroit Mercy.
